How to Make AI Cartoon Videos with Seedance: Consistent Characters, Shot by Shot

How to Make AI Cartoon Videos with Seedance: Consistent Characters, Shot by Shot

A practical guide to making cartoon and animated videos with Seedance: character references, style prompts, the right settings, keeping the same character across shots, and turning clips into a narrated story.

Seedance is very good at cartoons. Give it a flat 2D style, a 3D animated look or an anime aesthetic and it holds that look through the whole clip, with motion that feels drawn rather than filmed. The hard part of an AI cartoon is not one good shot. It is making the tenth shot look like the same show as the first: same character, same outfit, same proportions, same style.

This guide walks through how to do that on seedance2.ink, from a single character reference to a sequence of shots, and what to do when you need a full narrated cartoon story instead of a handful of clips.

What You Need Before You Start

  • A character reference image. One clean picture of your character: full body, facing the camera, plain background, nothing covering the face or outfit. This picture does more for consistency than any prompt wording.
  • A style decision. Pick one style and write it down as a short phrase you will paste into every prompt, for example flat 2D cartoon, thick clean outlines, bright pastel colors.
  • A shot list. Even three lines ("Milo wakes up", "Milo runs to the bus", "Milo misses the bus") keep every clip short and focused.

No reference image yet? Make one with your favorite image model first, or start in Text to Video and save the frame you like best as your reference.

Step 1: Choose the Right Mode

The generator on seedance2.ink has three modes. For cartoons, each one has a job:

ModeUse it forWhy it helps cartoons
Text to VideoExploring a style, one-off gagsThe fastest way to see how a style prompt looks in motion
Start/End FrameAnimating an exact drawing, continuing a previous shotThe first frame is your picture, exactly as you drew it
All ReferenceA recurring character across many shotsThe character image is a reference, not a fixed frame, so the camera and pose can change while the design stays the same

For a series, All Reference is the mode you will use most. Upload the character image, then refer to it in the prompt as @Image 1.

Step 2: Write the Prompt in a Fixed Order

A cartoon prompt that keeps working shot after shot has the same five parts in the same order:

[Style] + [Character from @Image 1] + [Action] + [Camera] + [Setting and light]

Keep the style phrase and the character description identical in every prompt. Only change the action, the camera and the setting.

Three examples you can adapt:

2D flat cartoon (All Reference)

Flat 2D cartoon, thick clean outlines, bright pastel colors. The orange cat from @Image 1, wearing the same blue scarf, tiptoes across a kitchen counter toward a fish on a plate. Slow push-in from the side. Warm morning light through a window.

3D animated feature look (All Reference)

3D animated feature style, soft global illumination, rounded shapes. The girl from @Image 1 in her yellow raincoat jumps into a puddle and laughs as water splashes up. Low-angle shot, slight slow motion. Rainy city street at dusk, glowing shop windows.

Anime (Start/End Frame, first frame only)

Anime style, cel shading, detailed sky. The boy in the first frame turns his head toward the camera as the wind lifts his hair and the petals around him. The camera slowly orbits to his left. Late afternoon, golden light.

Three tips matter more for cartoons than for realistic video:

  • Name the style in plain words. "Flat 2D", "cel shading", "thick outlines" and "watercolor texture" work better than naming a studio.
  • Ask for exaggerated acting. Cartoons read through big poses: "eyes go wide", "ears droop", "jumps back in surprise". Small, subtle movement tends to look stiff.
  • One action per shot. When three things happen in a 5-second clip, usually none of them land.

Step 3: Pick Settings for Where the Video Will Live

  • Aspect ratio: 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts; 16:9 for YouTube; 1:1 for feed posts.
  • Duration: 5 seconds is plenty for most cartoon beats. Seedance 2.5 renders 4 to 30 seconds per clip and Seedance 2.0 renders 4 to 15, so save the longer takes for continuous action such as a chase.
  • Resolution: draft at 480p while you are still fixing the prompt, then render the keeper at 720p or 1080p. Seedance 2.0 goes up to 4K.
  • Audio: turn it on if you want sound effects and voices generated together with the picture. Turn it off if you plan to add your own narration and music later.

Step 4: Keep the Character the Same Across Shots

Character drift is the most common complaint about AI cartoons. These habits cut it down:

  1. Reuse the exact same reference image for every shot. Do not swap in a slightly different version halfway through.
  2. Paste the character description word for word. Write "the orange cat from @Image 1, wearing the same blue scarf" in every prompt, not "the cat" in one and "the kitty" in the next.
  3. Lock the style phrase. Changing "pastel" to "vivid" changes the show.
  4. Chain shots with frames. Save the last frame of a good clip and use it as the first frame of the next one in Start/End Frame mode, so the hand-off between shots is seamless.
  5. Add more angles when you have them. All Reference mode accepts up to 9 images on Seedance 2.0 and up to 30 on Seedance 2.5. A front view, a side view and a close-up of the face give the model more to hold on to.
  6. Keep the cast small. Two characters in a shot are manageable. Five usually means someone's outfit changes.
  7. Redo only the shot that drifted. If shot 6 goes wrong, regenerate shot 6 and keep the rest.

From Clips to a Full Cartoon Story

With the steps above you can make a strong 30-second to 1-minute cartoon by hand: about 6 to 12 clips cut together in an editor, with a voice-over and music on top.

Past that length, the work changes. A 5-minute story needs 40 or more shots, a script broken into scenes, narration that matches the pictures, music, captions and an edit that holds it all together. Generation is no longer the bottleneck; assembly is.

If that is the video you want to make, ToonBee AI is built for that step. It is an AI cartoon video generator that runs frontier video models, Seedance among them, inside a story workflow:

  • You enter a topic or paste a script, and approve the script before anything renders.
  • You pick a narrator voice and music.
  • You see a picture of every scene first, and can redraw any of them before a single credit goes on animation.
  • One reference image anchors every scene, so the same face and outfit carry through a video of up to 15 minutes.
  • Videos come out vertical (9:16) for Shorts or horizontal (16:9) for YouTube, with captions.

It suits children's stories, bedtime stories, animated Bible stories, explainers and faceless YouTube channels: videos where the narration carries the story and every scene needs the same characters. New accounts get free credits, no card needed.

FAQ

Can Seedance make cartoon and anime videos?

Yes. Seedance follows style instructions closely, so 2D cartoon, 3D animation, anime, watercolor and claymation looks all work. Describe the style in plain words at the start of the prompt and keep it the same across shots.

How do I keep the same cartoon character in every clip?

Use All Reference mode with the same character image every time, refer to it as @Image 1, and paste the same character description into every prompt. For seamless hand-offs, use the last frame of one clip as the first frame of the next.

How long can a Seedance cartoon clip be?

Seedance 2.5 renders 4 to 30 seconds per clip and Seedance 2.0 renders 4 to 15. Longer cartoons are made by joining several clips, or with a story tool that does the joining for you.

Can I turn a written script into a cartoon video?

With Seedance alone, you break the script into shots, generate each one and edit them together with your own narration. If you want the script narrated word for word, with every scene drawn and animated for you, ToonBee AI's script to video tool does it in one pass.
